Hotels in Tourlos

Tourlos is the small port village about two kilometres north of Mýkonos Chóra, built around the island's new ferry port and yacht marina. Hotel pools here trade some of the old town's buzz for sea views and an easier ferry connection, with Chóra a short bus or taxi ride away.

Most travellers pass through Tourlos without stopping, since this is where the large ferries from Piraeus and Rafina dock at the Neo Limani, a couple of kilometres short of Chóra itself. That makes it a practical base if you are arriving or leaving by boat, or if you would rather watch yachts come and go from a pool terrace than compete for a sunbed near Little Venice. The village has far fewer hotels than Chóra, so choice is limited, but properties here tend to sit close to the water with balconies looking out over the marina. Mykonos Airport, JMK, is a similar distance away as from Chóra, so Tourlos does not cost you much time either way. A local bus and short taxi ride connect Tourlos to Matoyianni's restaurants and nightlife for evenings out.

What to expect

  • New port (Neo Limani) for ferries from Piraeus and Rafina, a short taxi ride from most hotels.
  • Yacht marina views from several hotel pools and balconies.
  • Quieter alternative to Chóra, with the old town about two kilometres and a short bus ride away.
  • Croco Mykonos offers a year-round outdoor pool, unusual for the wider island.
  • Similar distance to Mykonos Airport (JMK) as from central Chóra.

Local tips

  • Book here if you have an early ferry to catch and do not want to cross the island at dawn.
  • Check whether your hotel's pool runs year-round, like Croco Mykonos, or closes for winter as most Mykonos properties do.
  • Use the local bus or a short taxi for Matoyianni's restaurants and bars rather than walking after dark.
  • Ask for a marina-facing room if you want to watch yachts arrive rather than a street view.
  • Pack for wind; the port area catches more of the meltemi than sheltered corners of Chóra.

Where to stay

FAQ

Is Tourlos close to Mýkonos Chóra?

Yes, about two kilometres, roughly a five-minute drive or a short local bus ride. It is close enough for an evening in town but far enough that hotel pools stay quieter than those right in the old town.

Why do ferries arrive in Tourlos rather than Chóra?

Large ferries from Piraeus and Rafina use the Neo Limani, the new port built at Tourlos because the old harbour in Chóra cannot handle bigger vessels. Smaller boats and Delos excursions still use the Old Port in town.

Does Croco Mykonos run its pool year-round?

Croco Mykonos is one of the few Tourlos hotels advertising a year-round outdoor pool, which is unusual for the island. Most other Mykonos properties, in Tourlos and Chóra alike, close their pools for the winter months.

Is Tourlos a good base without a car?

It works if you rely on the local bus or taxis for reaching Chóra and the beaches, since Tourlos itself has little beyond the marina and a handful of hotels. Travellers who want to walk everywhere are usually better placed in Chóra.
