Hotels in Agra

Agra is a small city carrying an outsized reputation: nearly everyone who comes here is here for the Taj Mahal, and the mausoleum's white marble draws crowds at sunrise, when the light is softest and the queues are shortest. The monument closes on Fridays, a fixed detail worth building an itinerary around. Beyond the Taj, Agra Fort's red sandstone ramparts tell the Mughal story from a different angle, and Itmad-ud-Daula's tomb, often nicknamed the Baby Taj for its marble inlay, sits across the river alongside the Mehtab Bagh garden, a quieter spot for sunset views back toward the mausoleum. Most travellers arrive from Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway, a drive of roughly three to four hours, and base themselves near Taj Ganj for one or two nights before moving on.
