About this hotel

Five Cape Dutch townhouses were joined into one boutique address a short walk from Kloof and Long Street, and the roofline is where the hotel does its best work: two compact plunge pools, each 4m by 4m, share a sun deck with a bar that turns 360 degrees onto the mountain and the city bowl below. Downstairs, the spa runs three treatment rooms and a sauna, useful on the cooler days when the rooftop loses its appeal. Rooms keep period detail, but the pools are unmistakably modern additions, built for a quick dip between the shops on Long Street and dinner at one of the hotel's three restaurants. Rooms lean into modern comforts too, with Nespresso coffee machines, Ultra HD smart TVs with Netflix and rainshower bathrooms, some opening onto direct views of Table Mountain.

  • Rooftop plunge pools
  • 360-degree rooftop bar
  • Onsite spa and sauna
  • Heritage courtyard building

Our take

Cloud 9 suits travellers who want a central, walkable base with a rooftop pool scene rather than a resort-sized one. The two plunge pools are compact by design, better for cooling off with a drink than swimming laps, and the shared courtyard layout means public spaces can feel busy at peak hours. Anyone chasing a quiet, private pool should look at the estate properties in Constantia instead.

  • Head up to the rooftop before midday, the deck chairs around the plunge pools fill fast on warm afternoons
  • Book a treatment at the spa if the mountain wind picks up and the rooftop turns unusable
  • Walk down to Long Street for dinner instead of eating at all three on-site restaurants in one stay

Why we love it

  • Two 4m plunge pools sharing one rooftop deck
  • 360-degree bar view over the city bowl
  • Five heritage townhouses joined by one courtyard
  • Spa with sauna and three treatment rooms
Why guests love it

The rooftop is the reason to book Cloud 9: two small plunge pools side by side, cool enough for a proper dip after climbing up from Long Street, with the bar wrapped around them for a sundowner once the light turns gold over the mountain. The pools are plunge-sized, not lap pools, so serious swimmers will want somewhere else, but for an evening ritual of a swim and a drink with that view, the rooftop earns its reputation.
