About this hotel

Most Taiyuan hotels tuck their indoor pool away from the guestrooms, but Wyndham Taiyuan sells rooms with a marked pool view, which changes the daily rhythm of a stay here: a swim before breakfast is visible from bed rather than a separate errand down a corridor. The buffet breakfast leans into local specialities alongside the usual pastries and pancakes, and the traditional restaurant covers lunch, dinner and high tea for guests who would rather not leave the property. A fitness centre and terrace round out the wellness side, while private check-in, a 24-hour front desk and concierge service handle the practical end. At 18 kilometres from Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, it sits further out than most of the business-district hotels, which keeps the immediate surroundings quieter.

Our take

This suits travellers who want the indoor pool visible from the room rather than a walk away, and who value a full-service breakfast over a minimalist business stopover. Families booking a pool-view room get the most out of the layout here. Guests whose whole trip revolves around the Coal Trading Center should look at Kempinski or Sheraton instead, since Wyndham's 18-kilometre distance from the airport puts it further from that business cluster than most alternatives on this list.

  • Request a pool-view room specifically at booking, the standard category does not guarantee it.
  • Eat the buffet breakfast early, the local specialities tend to run out before the pastry section does.
  • Use the terrace and lounge in the evening, they sit closer to the pool floor than the main lobby.

Why we love it

  • Rooms with a direct view onto the indoor pool
  • Buffet breakfast built around local specialities
  • Traditional restaurant open through high tea
  • Quieter setting 18 km from the airport corridor
Why guests love it

The indoor pool here was smaller than I expected from the photos, but having our room look straight down onto it meant the kids could see it from the window every morning, which made getting them out the door easier than usual. Breakfast ran out of the local dumplings by the time we came down at nine, so an earlier trip down is worth planning for. The terrace in the evening was quieter than the pool itself, a good spot to sit once the children had worn themselves out swimming.
